The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
